“We can’t change our society until we change our mindset” — Davido

“We can’t change our society until we change our mindset” — Davido

Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has called for a change in Nigeria’s leadership and citizens’ attitudes, saying the country cannot progress without a shift in the mindset of its people.

Speaking during an episode of the I Wanna Talk podcast, the singer reflected on the 2020 EndSARS protests, saying he initially believed the demonstrations would lead to genuine change but later became discouraged when public attention appeared to shift back to festivities and everyday activities.

Davido said he was happy to see Nigerians come together to protest, but admitted that he eventually felt people could not continue risking their lives, especially with families and loved ones depending on them.

He also expressed concern over bad governance, injustice and the economic hardship faced by many Nigerians, noting that he could not fully advise people struggling financially because he did not share their circumstances.

Although he acknowledged having his own struggles, the singer said he was aware that his privileged background meant he could not speak from the same experience as those facing severe economic difficulties.

Davido further criticised the tendency of some individuals who campaign against poor leadership to change their positions after gaining political power. He also questioned why some Nigerians who participated in the EndSARS protests now support politicians they once opposed.

According to him, meaningful progress would require a change in attitude among both political leaders and ordinary citizens.

“We can't change our society until we change our mindset as a people. Today, the same people that were protesting are campaigning for politicians. Those who claim to fight for the people often change when they get power,” he said.

The singer ended his remarks with a call for Nigeria to improve, insisting that change must begin with both those in government and the citizens they lead.
